I’m amused at academics fretting over how to stop students from cheating on papers they write. It’s simple – stop writing academic papers. Instead, do stuff that you simply cannot cheat on. Build architectural models of something. Perform a play or concert on stage. Produce and record a song. Write proposals for new ideas and projects, backed with facts and logic, targeted toward a specific audience (which is the point anyhow, right?). Have students write/develop/build real products. No need for Turn-it-In. And now they’ve actually learned something they can use in real life.

Back-to-school night
Half the teachers talk about rules and grading policies, the other half about exciting topics and projects. Guess which classes our kids will enjoy?
Students worried about learning?
Overheard students in the hall discussing grades – not what they learned, but perceived fairness and comparing scores. Can’t blame them…we created the system.
